Accepting these terms

By downloading or using Angry Sam you agree to these terms. If you got the app from the App Store, Apple’s standard licence agreement for apps also applies; if these terms conflict with it about your use of the app, Apple’s terms win. If you don’t agree, please don’t use the app.

Your licence to use the app

We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use Angry Sam on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial learning, as allowed by the store you got it from.

Explore mode and Angry Sam Pro

You can open Angry Sam and look around for free in Explore mode. Learning sessions, reviews and adding words to learn need Angry Sam Pro.

• Plans. Angry Sam Pro is offered as an auto-renewing weekly or yearly subscription. The price, billing period and any trial or introductory offer are shown on the purchase screen before you buy. Prices can differ by country.
• Free trial. The yearly plan may include a free trial for eligible new subscribers. Unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends, the subscription starts and you’re charged at the end of the trial.
• Introductory offers. We may sometimes offer a discounted first period. The offer price applies only to that period; the subscription then renews at the regular price shown at purchase.
• Payment and renewal. Payment is charged to your Apple ID or Google account. Your subscription renews automatically unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends.
• Cancelling. Manage or cancel in your App Store or Google Play account settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal; you keep Pro until the end of the period you’ve paid for.
• Refunds. Apple and Google handle all payments and refunds under their own policies. We can’t issue refunds directly.
• Restoring. If you reinstall or change device, use “Restore purchases” in the app with the same store account.

Sam’s sense of humour

Sam is a fictional, deliberately grumpy tutor. His roasts are jokes about learning words, never about who you are. You choose how hard he goes: Mild, Spicy or Full Sam, and you can change it any time in Settings. If a line ever lands badly, switch to Mild and tell us. We read every message.

Acceptable use

Please don’t copy, resell or redistribute the app or its content; reverse-engineer it beyond what the law allows; interfere with its services; or use it to break the law. We may suspend access to services for anyone who misuses them.

Our content and open data credits

The app, Sam and every other character, the artwork, sounds, texts and design belong to Endless River or its licensors and are protected by copyright and other laws.

Parts of the vocabulary data are derived from open sources: Wiktionary (through Kaikki.org), the wordfreq word-frequency data and, for Japanese, the JMdict dictionary files of the Electronic Dictionary Research and Development Group. They are used under their licences, including Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 and the EDRDG licence. Our adaptations of that data are available under the same licences on request.

A learning companion, not a guarantee

Angry Sam helps you learn and remember words, but we can’t promise any particular result, level or exam score. Translations, examples, pronunciations and pictures are carefully checked, but some content is produced with the help of automated tools and can contain mistakes. If you spot one, email hello@endlessriver.xyz and we’ll fix it.

Limitation of liability

The app is provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, Endless River is not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for loss of data or progress. Our total liability to you for any claim is limited to the amount you paid for Angry Sam Pro in the twelve months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, or your statutory rights as a consumer.

Changes to the app and these terms

We keep improving Angry Sam and may change, add or remove features. We may update these terms. When we do, we’ll change the date at the top, and for significant changes we’ll tell you in the app. Continuing to use the app after a change means you accept the updated terms.

Ending the agreement

You can stop using Angry Sam at any time by deleting it; remember to cancel your subscription in your store account if you don’t want it to renew. We may end or suspend your access if you seriously breach these terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the jurisdiction in which Endless River is established, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and subject to any mandatory consumer protections of your country of residence.
